There’s a dirty secret in American politics that can’t be ignored any longer: lawmakers running as Republicans in state legislatures often govern like Democrats, sabotaging conservative reforms from within. While Democrats enforce strict ideological unity, conservatives face constant betrayals from within their own ranks, weakening reforms and frustrating voters.
Across America, so-called “Republicans” consistently undermine policies that align with the values of voters who put them in office. In Utah, landmark school choice legislation barely passed, missing nearly a quarter of GOP votes. In Tennessee, 21 Republicans opposed empowering parents with educational freedom—betraying constituents who put them into office.
These betrayals aren’t accidental. Left-wing institutions, led by powerful teachers’ unions like the NEA, have made infiltrating conservative legislatures a top priority. They back Republicans in name only, knowing these false conservatives will ultimately undermine crucial legislation.
Decades of “playing it safe” and avoiding hot-button issues have allowed these deceptive Republicans to remain hidden in plain sight. But voters deserve clarity. They deserve to know exactly who represents their interests—and who stands against them.
The solution? Accountability through action.
Legislators must face tough votes on reforms that strike at the heart of leftist power structures, especially teachers’ unions. Idaho and other states that force tough votes quickly expose those who genuinely fight for conservative principles—and those who merely pretend. The recent victories on school choice and union dues reform in states like Idaho and Texas prove this strategy works.
The Institute for Education Reform stands firmly with leaders who boldly push real conservative reforms, not symbolic gestures. We refuse to accept cosmetic victories or shallow promises. Only when the imposters and union sympathizers are unmasked and replaced will meaningful change truly begin.
Stay vigilant. Pay close attention to your lawmakers. Demand that Republicans act like conservatives. Hold them accountable, or replace them. It’s the only way forward for real education reform.
